Window Dressing Designer
Concept to Final Fabrication

On-set photo of Diagon Alley I designed and produced over 375 Window treatments. The window treatments were designed to match the Harry Potter film’s intent and were approved by Stuart Craig (academy award-winning production designer) personally. I researched and developed a new product line for a mill in Scotland to have the lace patterns milled in an Inherently Flame Retardent (IFR) fiber. See the design Selena page for more details.
Ollivander's facade on-set photo I designed and produced custom printed roller blinds on Inherently Flame Retardant (IFR) canvas with outdoor UV stable paints; custom lace, loomed with IFR fibers, & additional draperies from IFR fabrics all to match the Harry Potter films.
Magical Menagerie facade on-set photo This facade was unique and I cooperated all the techniques used through the land as well as a special treatment developed with the collaboration of Rosie Goodwin (Academy award-winning production designer) who was the on-set set decorator. 3” grosgrain ribbon was hung from doles to create a Wizarding World vertical blind allowing daylight to flood the shop but not overwhelm it.

Magical Menagerie facade close-up on-set photo

Diagon Alley at night on-set photo This photo is to help show how not only the day treatment look was considered in my designs but the night look with the lighting in the window boxes. The window box depths vary (some as small as 12") but the window treatment design along with the lighting is intended to make each window feel like a full-sized room.

Diagon Alley Gringotts perspective stairs on-set photo I used a lot of math and if I'm honest, I made a few extra cuts to make these window treatments work in the space.
Diagon Alley Gringotts Bank on-set photo A combination of the custom IFR lace & opaque IFR draperies helps to hide the audio engineering needed in this building.

Carkitt Market on-set photo 7 of these window treatments had to be designed and installed before the second story of the facility due to access unavailability port construction. These roller blinds drove my research and development of the material and paint requirements. I am proud to say that after 7 years they are still going strong.

Close-up on-set photo of a small high-up window All windows but one were addressed with treatment. Insider note: 1 window was left undressed. Only a few people know about fact and unless pointed it no guest will ever realize it.

This is an example of one of the layout callouts for the window treatments. I created these files using Adobe Suite (Illustrator, and Photoshop). Please note the facades were provided by the show-set team.

Example of a build file I created for one of the doors roller blinds. There were loads of build files.
Photo of the process at our production warehouse This is a close-up of one of the fabric designs I created. The scale was important as some of these treatments are 4 stories high.
Photo of the process at our production warehouse The custom lace was mounted on pre-cut batons with fullness in the treatment. Each window treatment was designed to make the window more transparent or more opaque based on the window location and lighting within the window box. This was done for each of the over 375 windows.
Photo of the process at our production warehouse After mounted on the baton, we hand-distressed every treatment to distress and age, knocking down the color before hanging it in the windows on site.
Photo of the process at our production warehouse After mounted on the baton, we hand-distressed every treatment to distress and age, knocking down the color before hanging it in the windows on site. In this photo, you can see how much destressing was applied by looking at the top of the treatment baton compared to the rest of the treatment. This was a custom print of my design applied to the canvas material using outdoor UV-rated paint.

On-set photo of the Owlery
Close-up on-set photo detail of the leather flaps of the Owlery As a last-minute request, I hand cut the leather flaps for the Owlery and distressed them with shoe polish to help the structure feel more organic. Insider note: I used coral-colored leather due to availability but used the suede side so no one would see the very non-Potter color.

On-set photo of the London window treatments as well as the textiles on the Knight Bus
Photo of the process at our production warehouse This treatment for the Wyndham's Theatre was to be a mini-Austrian drape. I sourced an Inherently Flame Retardent (IFR) sheer striped fabric and the production shop fabricated this durable treatment per my specification and direction.

Photo of the process at our production warehouse This fabric design for Kreacher's window was inspired by the wallpaper in the Black's family home used in the films. I used Illustrator to recreate the design and printed pattern on both canvas and heavy chenille used for the animated figure to push open.
A close-up on-set photo of Kreacher's window. Note the dark color of the window treatments against the white treatments throughout the rest of the London area is to help propel the story that this home is a magical one; different from the other homes around it. That conceit came from the senior design team and I always loved it. Close up of Kreacher’s window
Diagon Alley at night on-set photo

Diagon Alley at night on-set photo - one last look Every window has a story to tell about who the inhabitant of the space behind the treatment is. That is how and why Diagon Ally is so immersive - telling stories everywhere top to bottom. Inside and out even in spaces guests can not access.
